Blue or grey: which of the quiet options should you pick?
Grey is the more anonymous of the two and works against any colour you wear. Blue carries slightly more character: it reads as dark navy indoors and as blue in daylight, and it sits best with denim, navy and grey rather than with brown or tan. Both are far quieter than the red or the orange.
These are the two combinations riders choose when they want certified footwear nobody asks about. The difference between them is small but real.
Take the grey if you want the shoe to have no opinion at all. Take the blue if you like the idea of a detail that only shows when someone looks properly. Everything else about the two pairs is identical, including the last, the certification and the sole.
The insole comes out, and yours can go in
The shoe ships with a removable leather and latex insole. That is worth knowing for two reasons, and the second one gets overlooked.
The first is drying. A wet shoe dries properly only if air can get through it, and a glued-in insole traps moisture against the sole for days. Pull it out after a soaking, loosen the laces fully and let both dry at room temperature, and the shoe is ready the next day rather than the next week.
The second is that you can fit your own. If you wear custom orthotics or a prescribed insole, the factory one lifts straight out and yours drops in. That matters more in riding footwear than in ordinary shoes, because you cannot easily swap footwear mid-journey and a foot that is unsupported at hour one is painful by hour four. If you use a bulky orthotic, take the larger size: it needs the depth.
How long is the break-in, and what should you do that week?
About a week of ordinary wear. Full-grain leather starts firm and softens as it takes the shape of your foot. Wear them indoors for a few evenings before a long ride, lace them normally rather than tightly, and let the leather do the work. Never use heat or water to speed it up.
The temptation is to force it, and forcing it is how good leather gets ruined. Heat drives the oils out of the hide and leaves it stiff and prone to cracking, which is permanent.
What genuinely helps is short, repeated wear and a little conditioner. Expect the shoe to feel snug across the ball of the foot in the first days and to ease off after that. What will not change is length: if your toes touch the end on day one, break-in will not fix it and you should exchange the size while you still can.
